This solid wood furniture buying guide looks into facts about purchasing traditional furniture in solid wood. To begin with, if you really like preserving furniture, you ought to ask yourself a few questions before you start the hunt.

1. What is the particular styling you are looking for?
2. How long do you wish to keep the furniture?
3. Does it require regular maintenance?
4. Is it too outdated to be out of vogue say ten years from now?
5. Would you get bored looking at it some years from now?

Most of us like to preserve furniture for the value it holds. The style and theme, or something from the era that makes all the spending worthwhile!

Solid wood or Hardwood furniture: It is important to know the difference between hardwoods and softwood. Hardwood is sourced from non-needled tree like maple, cherry or mahogany. The wood is reputed for its robustness and durability, but is difficult for any carving and detailed form of wood work. Make sure solid wood furniture actually has solid wood on all furniture parts and pieces. Also, solid wood expands and contracts as per temperature and humidity changes, so furniture done in plywood and framed in veneered solid wood may be a good idea to purchase.

Solid woods are dried slowly in kilns till it retains about six percent moisture content. Then it is cut and shaped into pieces that provide the structural integrity of the furniture. Such solid wood pieces may include legs, casing and details that support the furniture. The joints are often given additional strength with bonding glues. To ensure a good job and whether furniture is properly joined, you can lift it by one corner and see. On lifting, the furniture should stay firm and retain its shape without racking or twisting.

Softwoods: Derived from needle-bearing trees such as pine or cedar, softwood is great for carving and their surface can be carved, but the wood may look weathered due to its soft surface that can easily be marked and blemished

Plywood and Particle Board : Use of non-solid wood to construct furniture has been the most misunderstood concept. As solid wood can expand and contract as per humidity changes in the weather, it is important to use plywood or ground wood to help with achieving a stable and user-friendly product. Especially in door and table construction, solid wood needs to have a flat base to reinforce the required stability. Plywood products manufactured of ground up wood are robust and less prone to warp or split. These large flat panels are usually framed in solid wood and covered by veneers to recreate the look of one large piece of wood. Veneering is a process by itself, and is explained in the next point.

Veneers : Veneering is a process that allows the natural grain to emerge beautifully on the surface. Traditional bedroom furniture and dining tabletops and dressers used veneering with a thin slice of wood selected for its outstanding character. Veneering has been used traditionally, dating back to ancient Egypt and Rome in the 17th Century. We find wood veneers in different types of furniture and pricing today. The advantages of veneering are many. In covering the core panels, veneers are often applied fashioning patterns that actually enhance the beauty of any furniture piece by many folds. Usually, more expensive woods which would be too costly or fragile to use as structural parts are used as veneers.

The Finish : Finishing plays a vital role in the appearance of any furniture. The finest furniture sold these days usually involves an intricate finishing process to achieve the flawless look. Involving different steps, once a furniture piece is ready it is thoroughly sanded or wiped. To highlight the wood grain, sometimes steel wool is used. For traditional designs, fly specking or distressing is undertaken to bestow the piece with antique looks.

Later, a sanding sealer is applied during final finish. A final sanding is done prior to the application of the top coat. Also, lacquering is done; it is used during last step for the final look, giving the piece its finished appearance. Lacquering whether done in matt, flat or glossy finish can endow a piece with great beauty and also make it waterproof and durable for the long run.

Engraving or Printing : Veneering is a costly process and to cut the cost, there is a method that is used to reproduce the wood grain. The wooden image is applied on top of flat panels like a look alike. If you are looking for the original thing, try to check the surface closely, when engraved, the grain will look even and uniform, almost flawless with no texture variation which is a sign that it can t be done from a piece of wood. Engraving and printing is normally done on the insides of a furniture piece that makes the finish less expensive. However, one of the major drawbacks of such an alternative is that it is not resistant and the grains may easily come off when exposed to water or any solvent.

For solid wood furniture like cabinets and storage units, you may want to make sure that the drawers are jointly secure and dovetailed for easy gliding. Also, pay attention to the doors so that they swing open easily without squeaking or rubbing, and that long doors are attached with study hinges. Practical details should help you check out with the manufacturer before you make the move.

Media rooms are a great gathering space for family movie night, for some hot competition in the ultimate gaming experience, or just someplace to kick back, listen to music and surf the Internet. Here are some hints about setting up your perfect Music and Home Theater environment.
What you’ll need
You can have an entirely affordable Home Theater with a setup as simple as a TV set, a pair of stereo speakers, and a DVD player. But usually a Home Theater is a little more elaborate if your goal is to duplicate on a smaller scale, of course the integration of picture, drama, and sound that you experience in a movie theater.

Surprisingly, even a basic home theater system can deliver remarkably enhanced playback of DVDs, videotapes, and even TV shows like “CSI” or “Smallville” that are recorded and broadcast in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound.

A basic home theater system consists of a pair of front speakers on either side of the TV, a center-channel speaker on top (or beneath) the TV set to anchor the actors dialogue at the TV screen, a pair of smaller surround speakers to either side of your seating that carry all the effects and ambient sound of a movie or TV show, and the movie score. Most home theater systems add a subwoofer for the deep bass sounds. That s six speakers in all, but they don t need to be big. You must add a Dolby Digital Surround Sound Audio/Video receiver, which contains all the necessary circuitry.

Electronics stores are happy to help you figure out what will work best in your home..
The Big Question: What type of TV?
CRT “direct-view”: The original TV technology set has been refined over the past half-century to an impressive and affordable level. However, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has ruled that all TV broadcasters in the US must convert to digital broadcasts and turn off their analog transmitters by 2009. Your old CRT TV set will not receive those digital broadcasts without a special set-top adaptor. Digital CRT sets deliver stunning high-definition images, although maximum screen size is limited to about 40 inches. Most digital cable boxes and small dish satellite tuners have the option of HDTV reception (with an upgraded dish). Big-screen CRT sets use rear-projection (RPTV), which looks best in dimly lit or darkened rooms, although new RPTVs are remarkably bright.

Plasma panels: Three to five inches thick and from 42-60 inches in diagonal screen size, flat plasma panels are so bright you can view them in a well-lighted room, and they remain clear and bright over a wide viewing angle. However, they use a lot of power, run fairly warm and are subject to burn-in if you re not careful (an image permanently imprinted on the screen).

LCD flat-panel display: An LCD flat panel is like your computer screen, with a maximum screen size of about 37 inches. LCD flat panels are capable of very accurate color and HDTV resolution, but LCDs still have trouble producing a true black, and they aren t viewable over as wide an angle.

DLP rear- and front-projection TV: The very latest. DLP is remarkably compact and capable of bright images with blacks that are the equal of plasma and better than LCD-based displays. DLP is still an emerging technology and some images can be subject to a “rainbow effects”.

Choose the Right Screen Size for your Room
Where you sit determines the clarity of the picture on the TV. If all you watch are true HDTV images, then you can sit as close as twice the diagonal screen size about 8 feet away for a 46-inch or a bit more for a 50-inch diagonal screen. However, until the final conversion to all-HDTV broadcasting is complete, a lot of your TV viewing may well be conventional analog TV, and those images may look awful up close.

If you watch regular non-HD TV sitting too close to a big screen, you ll see all the flaws. Figure on three times the diagonal screen size as a minimum viewing distance from standard TVs. So if you want a 60-inch diagonal screen, you should be 15 feet away to watch regular TV and still be pleased with the picture. For HDTV or DVDs, the picture will be great at that distance.
Comfortable seating
Of utmost importance in your media room is the quality of seating. You know you ll be sitting there for at least the length of the game or movie. And it s often the place you will come to unwind, so make sure couches or dedicated theater seats allow you to watch the screen in the way that s most comfortable for you.
A note of caution with media room furniture:
When you put a tower speaker (or a bookshelf model) inside a wall unit, credenza, or entertainment center, the way the sound bounces off the surfaces in the wall unit s cavity may produce some sound anomalies and unmusical colorations. Of course, if your partner detests seeing large speakers and wants them hidden away, you ll probably never even notice the slight difference in the sound.
Have fun.
I have a friend with a true home theater, complete with gold twisted cord at the entranceway and a red velvet curtain that swishes away to reveal the huge screen. It s truly an experience lounging on those plush couches and watching “Lost” . . . and the popcorn is free!

Running longer permits smaller units to maintain a regular room temperature, remove moisture from the room (thereby getting rid of humidity) and ultimately gives you greater comfort.

Even you are selecting a machine for central air-conditioning size is of considerable importance. This sizing however needs to be done by a pro. When dealing with a central air-conditioning system for your home make sure that the fan shuts off along with the compressor, that is, do not make the central fan for circulate the cool air, use circulating fans for each room instead.

Following are a few cooling tips which will save your air conditioning systems from breaking out in a sweat;

(1) Use whole house fans. These help maintain a cool temperature by dragging cool air through the whole house and throwing out the hot air through the attic. Whole house fans work best during night time when the outdoors is cooler than the indoors.

(2) In the summer months your thermostat should ideally be set as high as possible. The closer the temperatures outside and inside are the less your cooling bill! If your thermostat is set at a colder setting your cooling rate will slow down, the temperature will fall to an uncomfortable level plus your cooling expenses will mount.

(3) Let your fan s speed be high, unless of course the weather is particularly humid in which case you will be better off setting it at a lower speed.

(4) Use an interior fan to complement your window AC. This will give your AC a helping hand and distribute the cool air better without unnecessarily increasing your electricity bills.

(5) Putting your lamps, TV sets etc. near your thermostat is a big no-no. heat from these appliances can be detected by the thermostat making the AC run unnecessarily long.

(6) Its ok to put trees or shrubs to shade your AC but make sure they don t come in the way of the airflow. An AC unit functioning under a shade is known to use almost 10% less amount of electricity than one functioning directly under the sun.

Learn how to properly seal your vinyl retrofit or replacement windows to avoid future leaking problems

Retrofit windows, vinyl windows, replacement windows, how to install windows, how to treplace windows

To find the best Patios Dublin company, click here for Active Paving.
These days a lot of homeowners are replacing their old windows with vinyl windows using the retrofit style of window frame. This is particularly true in the west, and specifically, in California. The number one arguement that I have heard against using the retrofit method, is that it is susceptible to water leaks. Well, that’s true if you don’t do it properly. But, if you do a complete tearout of your old window down to the studs, you’re going to have water leak issues there as well if you don’t install the new window properly. So I think that arguement is, well, all wet. So, let me tell you the best way to install your retrofit windows that will ensure that water cannot get in.

There is an old song that goes, “It never rains in California, but girl don’t they warn ya, it pours, man it pours”. For those of you in California, you know how true this is. While California doesn’t get a lot of annual rainfall, when it does rain, it can come down in buckets due to the close proximity to the ocean. So, you want to be sure that your windows are well sealed. If you are installing retrofit frames against a stucco house, you want to put a thick bead of sealant right on the outside face of the old window frame, all the way around. Latex caulk should work fine, but if you want to spend a little more to get the best sealant available, use 100% silicone. Depending on the number of windows you will be doing, this extra cost can add up. You pay approximately $1 for a tube of acrylic latex caulk, and $4 or more for a tube of 100% silicone. You are going to use 1-3 tubes per window, depending on the size. So you can see how it could add up. Here is a trick that I used to do to save a little money; The most vulnerable part of your installation is the top of the window, because gravity will have the water running down from the roof to the ground. It’s not likely that water is going to find it’s way through the sides or bottom. So, I used to carry two caulking guns, and load one with the silicone, and the other with the acrylic caulk. I would run the silicone accross the top of the old frame, and caulk the sides and bottom. Then, put your new window into the opening and have a helper hold it firmly in place while you plumb and level it, then screw it into place.
After you have the window completely installed, your final step should be to caulk where the retrofit lip meets the stucco. Here again, I used to use white silicone on the top, and caulk on the sides and bottom. You now have a double barrier against water infiltration. After about a week, check the sealant around each window for signs of cracking. Because stucco is usually uneven, there could have been gaps that were larger in some areas than in others. If you don’t force the caulk into the gap to completely fill it, the caulk can sag before drying, causing a crack to form. Simply recaulk over any cracks that you see. You can check the silicone on top as well, but because silicone dries like a rubber substance, you shouldn’t see any cracks there. OK, what if the replacement windows are going between wood trim surrounding the opening? If you are using the retrofit lip, and trimming it to fit between the wood, then you still apply the heavy bead to the old frame before installing the window. But, instead of sealing where the retrofit lip meets the stucco, you seal where it meets the wood. Then, you want to be sure to seal above the window, where the top piece of wood meets the stucco. Again, use silicone up there. Now, no water can run down the stucco wall and get under the top piece of wood.

Sometimes, though, you might decide not to use a retrofit style frame between the wood, choosing a block replacement frame instead. If you choose to do it this way, you have to add trim to the outside. You still want to apply the sealant to the old frame, then apply your trim so it contacts the new window as well as the sealant on the old frame. If you follow these procedures, you won’t have to worry about any water penetrating into your home, I don’t care how hard it pours!

DDWex Cordless Tools Guide

This articles discusses points to weigh regarding the purchase and use of cordless tools.

cordless, tools, reviews, rankings, guide

— Battery Size —
For cordless tools, power is determined by battery voltage: the higher the voltage, the more power and torque the tool has available. While more power and torque may seem like like something you want, there are trade-offs to be made. With high voltage cordless tools, along with the additional power, comes additional cost and additional tool weight.

Here is a typical comparison to illustrate the point. A typical 9.6 Volt cordless drill will typically weigh in the neighborhood of 3-1/2 pounds and cost anywhere from $35 – $150. As a comparison, a 19.2 Volt cordless drill can weigh up to 10 pounds and cost in the range of $125 – $300. If the increased torque and power of a 19.2 Volt cordless drill is really needed, the added cost may be worth it. But if you are using your cordless drill to occasionally drive screws in your home, a 19.2 Volt cordless drill is probably not worth it since it is harder to use (since it is heavy) and money not well spent. If you really do not need the additional power, a cheaper, light-weight cordless drill will probably suit your needs much better.

— Number of Batteries —
Another point to consider when buying a new cordless tool is the number of batteries that come included with the tool. If you plan on using your tool for extended periods of time or often, you will want to only consider tools that come with two batteries. It is very frustrating when your batteries dies in the middle of something and you have to wait a couple of hours for the battery to charge before you can get back to what you were doing. When you are purchasing a tool, make sure it comes with two batteries. If it does not, look up the cost of an additional battery and include that when you are comparing costs between tools.

— Battery Type —
Two types of batteries are for sale for cordless tools: Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) and Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH). Do yourself a favor, do not purchase a cordless tool that uses NiMH batteries. Yes, it may be cheaper, but it is cheap for a very good reason. NiMH batteries have issues with memory problems (they need to be completely discharged before they are recharged or they lose charge capacity), they do not last for as many charge cycles (the batteries die quicker), and they are lower power than equivalent voltage Li-Ion batteries.

— Battery and Tool Storage —
Even when your cordless tool is off, it will draw a small amount of energy from the battery. While the amount of energy being drawn is slight, it can add up to a significant amount over the course of days, or weeks. So when you put away your cordless tools, be sure to remove the battery; this will help ensure that the battery is charged when you need it. Do not keep your battery in the charger for extended periods of time. While there are some chargers that claim to be “smart” about this, but as a rule storing your cordless tool batteries in the charger will lead to them dying sooner than if you do not. When storing your batteries avoid storing them in heat and cold. Cold weather will not harm your battery long-term, but it will decrease the amount of available power when the tool is being used. High heat can permanently ruin the batteries of your cordless tools. Avoid high heat, and do not charge your batteries in an area that is overly hot, this can permanently damage the battery.

–Charging Your Batteries–
Many higher-end cordless tools now come with advanced chargers that allow the battery to be charged in a very short period of time; often in about 15 minutes. For comparison, a standard charger can take up to 3 hours to charge the battery. If you need a quick-charging battery for your tool, look into the charging options that are available prior to getting a cordless tool.

— Pick a Brand —
An easy way to avoid problems with battery availability is to decide on a battery size and brand and stay with it. If you consistently purchase the same brand of tool with the same battery size when buying drills, trim saws, reciprocating saws, screwdrivers, etc, you will be able to share batteries and chargers between all of your tools. This will increase the number of available batteries and it ensures that you will never run out of charged batteries.

Hello, my name is John Rocco.I grew up around the window and door business. My father owned a glass shop that dealt in every aspect of residential and commercial glass.Naturally, when it came time to choose a profession, I wound up in the window and door business.I have been in the business for about 27 years, and I have been self employed for 20.

One of the things that separated my company from my competitors was my willingness to show my customers how to replace their windows themselves. Whenever I would encounter a customer with a curiosity or willingness to learn how to install their own windows, I would offer to sell them the labor on one window, using them as my helper. Then, they would install the rest of the windows using the knowledge gained from helping me install one. Most window companies would never do this because there is so much money made on the labor. But I was always so busy,I never felt like it was costing me money.

Eventually, I made an installation video for those homeowners who wanted to do their own windows. While the video is for sale on my website, I decided to take excerpts from the video and write an article once a week covering some part of the window replacement project. This article is going to cover the difference between window frames used in new construction homes, and the window frames that are used to replace existing aluminum or wood windows.

When a new home is being built, the windows are nailed to the wood studs that make up the house frame. In order to accomplish this, new construction windows have a fin around all four sides of the frame that rests against the outside of the stud and nails are driven into the studs through the nailing fin. After that, flashing paper is applied to prevent water leaks, then the exterior material is applied. That material can be stucco, brick, siding, etc.

Now,imagine 10 or 20 years later when you want to replace those windows. If you were going to install your replacement windows the same way the original windows were installed, you would have to remove the exterior material around each window in order to get to those nails holding the frame in there. You can see how this procedure could cause many problems, not to mention all the labor involved. I have seen homes in california with stucco exteriors where the homeowner had the stucco cut out in order to remove the old windows. The problem was they were unable to match the stucco colors after patching. Its just not a very efficient way to replace windows. So the replacement frame was designed.

In most parts of the country it’s simply a new construction window frame with the nail fin removed. In the west, where stucco is a common home exterior,a retrofit frame was designed. If you’re going to be replacing the exterior material on your home, then you might want to consider going with the new construction window, since the nailing fins will be exposed anyway. Also, chances are that a contractor will be doing your exterior replacement, and it would be wise to let the contractor install the windows as well.Since my installation videos deal with window replacement only, these articles will focus on replacement frames and retrofit frames. Using these two frame styles,a do it yourselfer can replace their old windows without any damage to existing interior and exterior surfaces. And the job can be done using common tools such as a drill, tape measure, and caulking gun.

In next weeks article,we will discuss the replacement of wood sash windows.

John Rocco has been installing replacement windows since 1978. To learn more, visit

Curio cabinets are the best way to display your curios and create focal points in a room. They are showcases to hold art objects, memorabilia, collectibles and items that share a common theme. Any curio cabinet, however, just will not do. It is advisable that the right showcase cabinet should be chosen carefully or even custom-made in order for it to be able to highlight the contents in the best possible way.

1. The Size

Curio cabinets can be small wall-mounted showcases and are recommendable to use if you have limited floor space and they can be also as large as 7 ft. x 7 ft. which are good to have if you have enough space and a lot of items to display.

2. Design

You can choose a curio cabinet made of teakwood, white cedar, rosewood or even plywood depending on your budget, taste and your living room’s theme and ambience. For example, if your living room has antique furniture, then it is better to opt for curio cabinets that are made of hardwood and are intricately carved with brass inlay and other elaborate embellishments. Consider also the number of shelves you will need for the cabinet and the material it has to be made of. These can either be made from clear glass or wood. As a style option, you can alternate glass shelves with wooden shelves to break the monotony. You can also use smoked glass.

3. Display Tips

Curio cabinets can have a single glass door, a double glass door or no doors, at all. It is recommended, however, that you choose those with doors to prevent dust from setting to your displays. If you have children or pets in your home, consider fastening the glass sides of your curio cabinet with a lock to prevent items from falling and breaking. Aside from these design considerations, you can also consider getting a curio cabinet with a mirrored back for visual expanse feeling especially if your living room is not spacious. The mirror does not only reflect the light in the room but also helps give an all-around view of the items displayed in the cabinet. To make cleaning easier such as vacuuming and dusting, consider installing casters underneath the cabinet.

4. Maitenance

– Use a damp cloth for wiping
– To polish the wood frame, use a hardwood polish every six months.
– For the glass sections and panels of the curio cases, use a damp newspaper to wipe it
– Cloth, no matter what kinds, leaves residue and never, wipe the glass surface dry because dust can settle on it which can cause some scratches
– To clean the curio pieces inside the cabinet, clean it with a damp cloth, soft brush or vacuum cleaner once a week
– For items made of crystal and glass, wash these in running water once every 3 to 6 months and wipe them with a dry soft cloth

5. What To Display

The color of the room plays a role in determining the type of object you should display as the base color. Such that glassware, white color based art objects and glassware will look great if the living room is predominantly white in color. If you have a small curio case and you have smaller items, then you can display your items individually. For those with curio cabinets, you can group together similar items of color, theme, or size together in 3s, 5s, or 7s. These items can be displayed alongside each other in a straight line or in a semi-circular fashion. To avoid a cluttered look, make sure that you leave some spaces on the shelf.

For collectors, a large curio cabinet can be used to display all collectible items over the years and it can be the focal point of the living room. As a tip, you can display collections together according to their color, the year of the collection and their size. Make sure that the bigger items are located at the back of the shelf and the smaller ones are in front so that all items displayed are visible.

6. Lighting

Lighting in a curio cabinet can make a person looking at the items displayed delighted because light does not only enhance the visual appeal but it also makes the entire collection have a dramatic effect. When considering lighting, choose soft focus lights to be installed in the center of the top shelf. Avoid installing lights on the corners or sides of the cabinet to make the light highlight the pieces evenly without making a shadow. In order to prevent the focus light from glaring, it is usually the case that it is hidden with a wooden panel on the shelf’s front.

How do you keep that new hardwood floor clean and shiny, now that its taken its place in your home or office? If its and engineered laminate floor, or true hardwood, snap together installation, the methods are about the same. Remember, large amounts of water can cause more damage than any other product you may use to keep your floors clean. The installation is a lifetime investment, so treat it as such.

Be sure to use runners and mats in high traffic areas. This will prevent scratches and ground in dirt from damaging your surfaces. Be sure to sweep and mop the areas around these runners and mats as well. Only use minimally damp mops and rags on your entire floor. You can use your vacuum cleaner on the floor too. Make sure it has plastic wheels that are clean before you roll it onto your new floor. It s a fantastic way to get ALL the dirt and dust up from a floor before its damp mopped.

Do not use oil based cleaners on your new floor. They will only catch dirt and cause an oily film to appear on your floors. Remember that most hardwood floors are finished at the factory with polyurethane or some type of urethane. Many hardwood floor suppliers can suggest what types of cleaners to use for your particular brand of floor. Try to use a manufacturer recommended cleaner if possible. Even places like Home Depot, who sell engineered flooring themselves, can suggest and supply these types of cleaners. You can try your Supermarket as well.

And, last, but not least, of all the cleaners that are specifically available for your floor, a good old standby, that works every time, and is very cost effective is, a capful of vinegar in your pail of cleaning water. It is non-toxic, and does not leave streaks when dry and does a great job of cleaning as well.

When I was a little girl, I remember my dad taking us for drives at night throughout our neighborhood to see the houses decorated for Christmas. There were some that had a simple wreath on the front door and some that looked like Santa s Workshop on the front lawn.

I was always amazed at the beautiful lights, glistening snow, and holiday music. It wasn t until I was an adult that I realized those beautiful displays took a lot more organizing, planning and money than I thought.

Whether you live in a cold or warm climate, you don t have to break the bank in order to create a cozy and beautiful outdoor holiday display for your home.

Here s how.

Create a plan. You need to decide how much money you can comfortably spend. Many people wind up over-spending during the holidays, use credit cards and find they take on more debt than they should. August or September is a good time to start planning and it won t take long. Many retail stores are beginning to announce pre-Christmas sales and this is the time to find bargains.

If you live in a closed community, check for rules and restrictions. This will save you any headaches later on if there are certain things not permitted.

Here are some things to think about when creating your plan.

To Theme or Not to Theme: Once you have determined your spending limit, next is to decide how creative to get. Do you want to create a theme on your front lawn such as Disney or Santa s workshop or would you rather stay traditional with just some lights and perhaps just a reindeer.

Lights How many front windows do you have and do you want lights on all of them? If you live in a 2-story house, don t forget the second floor. Measure your windows, so you know how many strings or yardage of lights you will need. Equally important is to check for an outside electrical receptacle where you will be plugging them in.

Window candles These are the electric or battery-operated lights that look like a glowing stick candle on a window sill and create a nice, cozy effect. If you choose electric, make sure you have enough receptacles by each window to plug them in. If you choose battery-operated, you will need to have extra batteries on hand.

Front Door Decorating your front door can be as elaborate as a gift box or as simple as hanging either a real or artificial wreath.

Lawn Ornaments These can be anything from simple signs that say, Santa, Stop Here or North Pole to an entire village of animated characters re-creating Santa s Workshop.

Roof I am reminded of an episode from the TV show Home Improvement , where Tim literally fell through his roof when trying to re-create Santa s sleigh and reindeer on his roof. Safety is always the first consideration. If you want to put holiday displays on your roof, you may be better off hiring a professional.

Once you have gone through this list and created your plan, start scouting the newspapers for sales at retail stores. Home improvement stores or discount stores will usually have an entire department established just for outdoor holiday decorations.

If you live in a cold-weather climate, putting up the lights and roof ornaments is best done before the snow and chilling temperatures arrive.

Plan early to stay within budget and you will have a great time decorating the outside of your home for the holidays.
