1. Think of the project as a new diet.
Who doesn t want to lose at least five pounds? This is one way to do it. Between running to stores aRL day and evening long, meeting with contractors, inspecting the work, searching the Western world for the perfect light fixture, who has time to eat? Provided you don t sabotage this new, unorthodox diet plan, with McDonalds drive through, you re good for losing five pounds. If you are a masochistic type who does some of the work yourself whether it be painting, laying tile, landscaping the yard you can count on another five to ten pounds of weight loss. Just think, you may be miserable, frustrated, exhausted, nd down right cynical about the good of the humankind, but your
jeans wiRL fit nicely!

2. Write checks as aerobic exercise.
These workouts are great for toning the wrist and fingers. Usually done in hectic spurts as you race out the door in the morning while the contractors are breathing down your neck and your kids are beating each other with the lunch boxes you just prepared, the stress and frantic activity are sure to raise your heartbeat for a good hour. Grumbling under your breath that the plumber, electrician, or you name it, isn t really worth this much money adds greater intensity and calorie burn to this little publicized exercise regime.

3. Save money through shopping burnout
Yes, even the most die-hard shopper wiRL come to dread setting foot in any store. This affliction starts innocently enough as you go to look for light fixtures. How hard can it be? Hard! Either the light you want is being shipped from Yugoslavia and won t arrive until your youngest child buys his own home, or you just can t find the one you want. You RL shop every lighting and electrical store you know. You RL search Home Depot. You RL haunt hardware stores. And then there s plumbing fixtures. Sink centers, faucet handles, finishes, special orders. What s aRL that about? And the cost. You d think you were outfitting the palace for a former third world dictator. Of course, there s carpet, tile, hardwood, stairs, siding, windows. Enough already. And you thought it was a pain picking mints and sweet
table treats for your wedding.

After your 1000th trip to Home Depot (or Lowes or Menards or whatever), in addition to aRL the other trips you ve made for items that shouldn t count as shopping (toilet seats, for example), you ve had it. Your friends won t be able to bribe you to check out the latest sale at Bloomingdales. You RL think it wiRL be better when you can pick out fun things like paint, waRL paper, drapes, fabric, furniture but don t bet on it. At this point, the pressure to make your home look like something other than an empty rat maze wiRL counteract any joy in shopping. Spending this much money has never been such a miserable experience. As a result, when your home becomes half-way presentable, you RL refuse to shop again even for groceries for at least six months. The money you save during this shopping hiatus wiRL be sufficient for you to resume this previously pleasurable past time
once more without guilt.

4. Impress your friends with obscure facts.
Only someone that has built or remodeled their home can explain the fluid dynamics of a proper toilet water swirl. Or cite the International Building Code that calls for no more than 6 between electrical outlets. Or brag that triple glazed windows are really the wave of the future for light emitting device technology. See what I mean? 🙂

5. Pride yourself on your new creative skills.
You RL discover a creative side that you never knew existed. Like how to wash dishes in the bath tub. And how to make a fuRL course meal for a family of four using nothing more than a toaster and hot plate. Or how to fit an entire family in a house smaller than your first apartment. They say that necessity is the mother of invention. That s probably true, but I also think that the only thing that separates modern and pioneer life is just one kitchen or bath remodeling project.

6. YeRL at someone other than your kids and not feel guilty.
Honestly, as a modern woman trying to juggle the running of our homes, possibly a job, and the future Olympic soccer aspirations of our children, you have the primal need to yell. At someone. Anyone. Often our spouse and children suffer from this need of ours to release pent up negative energy generated from nothing more than some miniature human leaving smelly gym shoes on the kitchen table. (Ok, that probably deserves a bit of yelling we eat at this table!) But when you remodel your house, you have a whole cast of characters and believe me, they re characters that often deserve a good scream from time to time. Like when they teRL you that they tore out the fireplace because they didn t think it looked right. Or when they show you a mistake made three weeks ago that now requires half the house to be torn down in order to fix. Yelling isn t immature or a result of too much estrogen, it s therapy.

7. Throw out (finally) your significant other s treasured [fiRL in the blank] from his bachelor days.
You know what I mean. It could be the semi-nude poster he won t get rid of. Or his collection of exotic beer cans. Or aRL of his Sports Illustrated magazines since the Chicago Bears last won the Superbowl. Now is the perfect time to get rid of it. If you need to move out of your house while the remodeling is done, or you are moving to a new home, such an opportune time may never occur again. Say it won t fit in the rental house. It s either this or his golf clubs. Gently remind him that the sentimental item really serves as a reminder of his advancing years. Anything. Get rid of it. It wiRL be one positive you can remind yourself of when the stress of remodeling makes you feel that this project was the biggest mistake of your life.

8. Grow closer to your family through forced bathroom sharing.
The saying goes that absence makes the heart grow fonder. Perhaps that wise pundit had to share a closet sized bathroom with three kids and a spouse. In reality, there s no greater way to create intimacy in a family than by aRL trying to get ready for the morning in the same 7 x 5 space. You RL learn new exciting things about your children like toilet paper is purely optional for little boys. You RL discover that there is no bond quite like the one created when the entire family brushes their teeth together over the same sink. You RL realize why the older generation of your relatives only washed their hair once a week instead of facing communal bathroom time. But most importantly, you RL no longer need to yeRL at your kids to hurry up for school they re standing right next to you.

9. Earn free flights from aRL of your purchases.
In what is admittedly (and somewhat sheepishly) the only practical survival tip on this list, get an airline mileage credit card. Charge everything on it lights, plumbing fixtures, windows, doors, lumber, carpet. The windows alone can get you close to one free trip. Whether you decide to share your miles with anyone else in the family or to escape on your own to a world of quiet solitude and, preferably, an open bar, is entirely up to you.

10. Hire some good looking contractors and feel like you re 15 years old again.
Hey, guys get a whole chain of restaurants and bars where the main attraction is busty waitresses in tight t-shirts (Hooters). Why can t us gals have some eye candy once in a while? Besides, it s a productivity tool. You RL be more likely to inspect the job or meet the architect if some young, fit, good-looking men are there especially in the summer months when shirts tend to become optional. For example, we once hired a roofing crew of male model wannabees for a house we built. My husband called them the Beefcake Roofers. They created quite a stir in the neighborhood that summer. Let me teRL you, it made rushing to stop by the house to go over notes with the trades first thing in the morning a bit more interesting and much more fun!

Finally, remember, the end result of your new house wiRL be worth the aggravation of the process. Plus, think of aRL the good stories you can tell!

What’s the most important thing about schools and the education system? There’s likely to be many different answers to this question depending on whether you’re a parent, a teacher, a school governor or indeed a pupil.

There’s one thing that virtually everyone will agree on though and that is making sure our schools and nurseries are safe environments. So with safety perhaps the major issue with modern schools what steps can schools take to make sure their school is as safe as possible?

Here are just 5 ways in which schools can use new technology to make sure their staff, pupils and the school is as safe as possible:

CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television)

With over 4.2 million CCTV camera’s in the UK alone (one for every 14 people) this method of security is now common place. CCTV is used for a wide variety of things but for schools the use of CCTV allows for the monitoring of property and people. There has been much debate over the effectiveness of CCTV as a means of crime prevention but capturing criminal or anti-social behaviour both inside and outside of schools can certainly lead to action being taken against the culprits and also hopefully reduce the likelihood of it even happening in the first place.

Security Lighting

As the dark winter nights are now upon us and with children and teachers often starting and ending school in darkness (or dusk) then having adequate lighting is very popular. Security lighting can act in 2 ways. Firstly it gives pupils and employees more confidence by providing a well lit and seemingly safe environment. Not only that security lighting may also deter would be criminals and trouble makers.

Intruder Alarms

You’re lying in bed fast asleep having a wonderful dream when BANG, a car alarm goes off and interrupts your peaceful sleep. And stays on for what seems like an eternity. It finally gets turned off and you can’t back to sleep! Sound familiar?

Is so you’ll know what impact an intruder alarm can have. For schools this is important as depending on the type of alarm you have it can alert other teachers, school workers, school children and/or the police.

The result hopefully being that whatever caused the alarm to be activated, stops. And you, your school and your staff and pupils are safe.

Access Control Panels

These can be used by schools to prevent access to the building or to specific areas within the school. They can be used to make staff feel safer and to prevent unwanted visitors to certain areas.

Two Way Radio

The mobile phone has meant it is easier than ever to stay in touch but mobile phones suffer from cost issues and lack of coverage which means they aren’t used by schools. The good news for schools is that modern Two Way Radio allows employees (from teachers to ground staff) to stay in touch wherever they are for just the cost of the actual handset. No ongoing costs and a fast and highly effective way to stay in touch both within the school and on field trips make Two Way Radio a must for any school with a focus on security and safety.

For information on Two Way Radios and how they can be used in your school visit Apex Radio Systems at http://www.apexradio.co.uk. Apex Radio are the UK’s Leading Providers of Radio Equipment to Schools through their School Watch scheme and now have the brand new ICOM F25SR Handset which gives Schools an affordable and mobile way to stay in touch.

Make sure your School, your staff and your pupils are secure and safe and make sure modern technology works for you.

Solid hardwood floors look great. They have a tough chunky look that spells quality and long life. And they will last long and look magnificent throughout if you take the effort to look after them. It s not difficult, and the right kind of care will add years to your beautiful hardwood floor.

1. The worst enemies of your hardwood floor are grit, sand and dirt. These three act like sandpaper grinding, scraping and dulling the shiny surface until it becomes ugly. Use small mats near outside doors to prevent the dirt getting further into your house.

2. Water allowed to stand on any part of your hardwood floor can cause warping and discoloration. Be sure to wipe up any spills promptly.

3. Re-arranging the furniture is fine, but lift it rather than drag it. This will avoid scratches.

4. The sun can be strong and have much more power than you may think in mid summer. Direct sunlight can discolor a hardwood floor. Protect it with drapes, curtains or blinds.

5. Clean your hardwood floor by using a good broom, a canister vacuum with a special bare floor attachment, or a good dust mop.

6. If your floor does get a bad scratch in it, get a scratch filler kit of the right color at your local hardware store. Sand and smooth the affected area first, then mix the solution to get the exact right color. When it has dried, lightly smooth with a low grit sandpaper, then polish.

7. Pets are among your hardwood floor s biggest enemies. They have claws and nails that scratch surfaces. Keep your pet s nails well trimmed. Also, keep pet food containers off the floor surface. Pets always spill food around the containers, which will damage the floor over time. Use newspaper or something more durable to protect the floor.

Hardwood floor styles come in strips, planks and parquet, and are available with numerous edge treatments such as square, micro, and beveled edges. The state-of-the-art technology and almost limitless choices of today’s stains, finishes, styles and designs makes hardwood flooring one of the most practical and versatile floor coverings available.

The shade of hardwood flooring you choose can dramatically change the look of your room. You can compliment the other design aspects in the room, bringing continuity and balance to the overall design. Lighter colors of hardwood help small rooms appear larger, while rich, dark tones add drama to larger rooms to create a warmer, more intimate feel.

One of the most popular attributes of hardwood flooring, is its natural coloration. Natural flooring adapts to any style, now or in the future. For rooms with plenty of natural light, you may want to consider some of the darker tones available. If the room doesn’t have natural light, you can lighten it up considerably by choosing a floor with a lighter color. Just remember, you can avoid being tied to a particular scheme by choosing natural colors.

Hardwood comes in a variety of strip and plank options. Strip flooring is 21/4 wide and plank comes in varying widths starting at 3″. You can visually expand the size of your room by selecting a strip floor, while a plank floor enhances a larger room. Choose a width that corresponds to the overall scale of the room. A popular option is to use different width planks ranging between 3-5-7″. This can create a more traditional and less formal look.

Beveled edge planks can help delineate detail in the natural wood and adds a more casual feel while square edge planks fit flush against each other creating a smooth, traditional look. An eased or micro-beveled edge creates an angled effect where boards meet to create more depth and dimension while creating a more casual, relaxed look. These profiles can give the overall floor pattern distinctively different looks.

DDWex How To Choose A Pot Rack For Your Kitchen

Word Count:
793

For the best Patios Wexford company, call Davitt Driveways Wexford.

The stylishly decorative and practical hanging or wall mounted pot rack might just be the storage space solution and energy saving kitchen device for you. This article provides 8 great tips on how to choose the pot rack that is right for your kitchen.

pot rack, hanging pot rack, kitchen pot rack

To find the best Patios Wexford company, click here for Davitt Driveways Wexford.
Do you want to free up some kitchen cabinet space and have your pots and pans hanging from a pot rack within easy reach? And do you want to have your cookbooks, cooking oils, and your basil and thyme herbs displayed neatly on a wall mounted pot rack as well?

Then the stylishly decorative and practical hanging or wall mounted pot rack might just be the storage space solution and energy saving kitchen device for you.

Possible origins of pot racks

The idea of hanging cookery pots in the kitchen may have originated from the 17th century practice of using an arrangement of links and hooks or trammels to suspend, raise or lower cooking pots in a fireplace to control cooking temperatures.

Up to the 15th century, most wealthy European homes had spacious kitchens with several adjacent anterooms, including whole rooms just for storing pots and pans and other utensils. However, it would not be surprising if poorer families with less spacious kitchens used pot racks, either in the form of tripods standing on the kitchen dirt floor or hooks hanging from the ceiling or wall, to store their pots and pans and other utensils.

How to choose a pot rack for your kitchen

1. The first question to ask is “Where do I want to put my pot rack?”. If you are going to put it on top of a kitchen island, for example, then you will probably need a pot rack hanging from the ceiling. If you are going to put it against the kitchen wall, then you may need to have the wall-mounted shelf type variety with a grid.

2. If you are going for a hanging pot rack you have to know how tall your ceiling is. Most pot racks are designed to fit 8 or 9-foot ceilings for easy access to cooks of average height. However, households with shorter cooks or taller ceilings need not despair. Most pot rack stores, whether online or down the road, carry a wide range of chains or extension hooks to solve the situation.

3. The next question is: “Do you want to match your pot rack to your kitchen’s decor?” For example, if you are going to hang your pot rack in a modern kitchen above a built-in kitchen island with stainless steel countertops, cooktops, ovens and dishwashers, then a stainless steel pot rack might be best for you.

However, if you are you are going to hang your pot rack in country cottage style kitchen next to oak timber cabinets and coffee black kitchen appliances, then a black hammered steel pot rack might be a good match.

4. And equally important is “How do you want the pot rack to look?” If you want a more modern look, then the clean lines of glistening stainless steel may be your best bet. If you are going for the antique look, then the decorative swirls of brassy copper may do the job.

5. What type of material do you want your pot rack to be made of? Do you want the country elegance of oak or natural cherry? The practicality and durability of painted or powder coated hammered steel? Or the sleekness and strength of stainless steel?

6. What size and shape do you want your pot rack to be – rectangular, round, oval or square? This may be dictated by the number of pots, pans and other cooking utensils that you want to fit in as well as the kitchen space that you have available.

7. Do you need additional light? If the pot rack is above a cooking and food preparation area, then you may need pot racks that come with downlights to illluminate as well as add ambience to your working space.

8. And last but not least, how much do you want to spend for your pot rack? A quick comparative shopping on the internet will reveal that sales abound and that:

– For a budget of $50 you can get a lovely powder-coated wall-mounted pot rack in bookshelf style to put your pots and pans as well as your favorite plant and recipe book side by side.

– A budget of $150 can get you a hanging stainless steel oval kitchen pot rack with grid.

– For $359.97 you can get a modern styled Oneida lighted pot rack with center grid and two downlights.

– And if you have $2000 to spare you can get a pot rack used by professional chefs in high tech stainless steel and with two rack levels that provide more storage and hanging space.

But if you are someone who does not own a lot of pots, loves the hunt and a good bargain and have $4.95, you can go to Ebay and get a pre-loved black wrought iron pot rack that attaches to the wall and holds 5 pots. That’s a start.

When it comes to home repairs or improvements, many people find themselves at a loss because they are either unable to complete the needed repairs or they simply do not have the time. In either situation, the best thing to do is to hire a professional contractor. But, what qualities should one look for in a contractor and how can you be sure that he/she will be the best person for the job? These are common questions and should be answered prior to hiring a professional contractor.

Below are 9 tips that will help guide you through the process of selecting the best man, or woman, for the job.

1) Before hiring a contractor, find out how long they have been in business. It s best to look for an established company and make sure to check out their reputation with the local Better Business Bureau for any outstanding or unresolved complaints.

2) Always make sure that a contractor is licensed to work in the state in which the work is to be done. The best way to find out about your state s licensing procedure is to contact your local building department and/or consumer protection agency. If your state requires that a contractor be licensed, always ask to see a contractor s license prior to hiring him/her for the job.

3) When considering potential contractors, ask for a list of recently completed projects that are similar to the one you are in need of help with. Hiring a contractor that is experienced in projects similar to yours will help to ensure that all goes smoothly and that the job will be done correctly.

4) Be sure to ask your contractor, prior to the commencement of work, whether or not the job will require any type of permit. All permits must be obtained before the actual work begins, when required, or the homeowner may face a fine. It is best to discuss who will be responsible for obtaining permits, either you or the contractor, in the beginning.

5) Always ask for the name of the individual who will be in charge of the project, often called a supervisor, and the names of those who will be working on the construction crew.

6) Once you are familiar with the supervisor, ask him/her about their crew. You will need to know whether or not they are trustworthy and make the decision as to whether you want them working on/in your home. Will they need keys? If so, you need to know that they are honest and can be trusted near your family and/or children.

7) Every professional contractor should carry a certain amount of insurance coverage, including personal liability, property damage and worker s compensation. You will need to request copies of all insurance certificates and confirm that they are current before work begins. Do not do business with a contractor who cannot provide this documentation as this may result in your being held liable for any injuries and/or damages that occur during the project.

8) Always check with the contractor s references before deciding to hire him/her for your project. This is important for all of the obvious reasons and will give you an idea as to their work ethics and end results.

9) When you and your contractor come to an agreement on payment terms, get everything in writing and have the agreement signed and notarized. All parties involved should have a copy of the agreement for future reference.

Before, Americans used fireplaces in order to provide heat inside the home. With modern heating appliances and central or under floor heating, fireplaces have become more of a pursuit in architecture and made a decoration rather than the primary method of heating your home. Fireplaces can become the focal points of living rooms with the help of beautiful yet functional fireplace accessories such as screens, irons, log racks, and more. From among these hearth accessories, be it an off-the-shelf or custom designer solution, a fireplace can become more attractive and have more character with the installation of fireplace screens.

1. Fireplace Screen Design

Traditional Fireplace Screen

These are fireplace screens that are simple and classic in design. These are usually clean to look at and can work with any interior theme decoration. Traditional fireplace screens are made from brass or copper. These could have a single panel to several ones. They come in various sizes, styles and finishes and you can never go wrong with them.

Antique Design

Fireplace screens categorized as antique are usually associated to rooms that are Victorian themed, rich in tapestries and are characterized as elegant. These types of fireplace screens are designed with rounded designs such as those that represent elegance such as swirls, flowers and scrolls. These screens designed for formal houses with fireplaces should be matched with other coordinating fireplace tools and log rack to make them more attractive.

Designer Fireplace Screens

These functional types of screens are typically stylish and are designed to set a balance and harmonize with a room’s d cor. These screens are recommended to be displayed and used with their accompanying fireplace tools and log rack.

Outdoor Fireplace Screens

These screens are versatile and give tribute from their design the different outdoor activities such as fishing, golfing, hunting, hiking, etc. These usually have a black finish and can blend into any theme or decorations. Just like the other fireplace screen designs, makes sure that its coordinating accessories go with it.

2. Fireplace Screen Color

Be it a designer, traditional or antique fireplace screen, choose those that complement the dominant color of the room where you are going to place this. For rooms whose dominant colors are considered cool such as green, green-blue, blue, violet, blue-violet, violet and violet-red, the best fireplace screens would be the ones finished in black, white, aluminum, pewter, stainless steel and brass. For rooms whose dominant color is warm such as red, orange, red-orange, yellow, yellow-orange and yellow-green, the ideal fireplace screens will be those that are finished with black, gold, rust, bronze, copper and any shade of brown finish.

3. Fireplace Screen Size

There are so many sizes and shapes of fireplaces. They can either be single paneled or have more to create a curved effect. The simplest fireplace screen would be the single panel because this can simply be placed in a straight line across the fireplace while a multi-paneled one seems a bit more complicated especially when you want to get this as your fireplace’s screen.

4. How Do You Know What Size Is Right?

– Measure the width of your fireplace

– Add 10 to 12 inches to the width taken above. This is the ideal width of the fireplace screen you should get.

– Measure the height of your fireplace.

– Add 3 to 5 inches to the height measurement you took above. This is the ideal height of the fireplace screen you should get.

Both extra inches added to both measurements ensure some allowance for the screen to fold and to avoid it from tipping over. Always make sure that you compare the dimensions that you were able to derive from the measurements to the dimensions of the fireplace screen products you are interested in purchasing.
